Week 2 (games of Sept.
13-14)
Offense QB J.J. Tutwiler, Jr.,
Cortland State Tutwiler rushed for a career-high 118 yards and a
touchdown, threw three TD passes and averaged 43.0 yards per punt in
Cortland's 41-38 overtime loss at home to New Jersey. Tutwiler is the
first quarterback in school history to pass for 300 yards (338 yards on
17-for-21 passing) and run for 100 yards in the same game.
OL Walter Young (LT), Matt Green (LG), Tyler Neely (C), Isaac Larson
(RG), Kevin Reese (RT), Whitworth The offensive line allowed only
two tackles for loss during the game. They controlled the line of
scrimmage against NAIA No. 20 Montana Tech, allowing Whitworth to have a
34:45-25:15 advantage in time of possession.
RB Fred Edwards, Sr., Wesley Edwards wasn't brought down
behind the line of scrimmage on any of his 37 carries, which he broke
through for 245 yards and two touchdowns in a 22-20 loss to Rowan.
RB Jake Barkley, Sr., St. Thomas Barkley set school record
for TDs in game with five as he led the Tommies to a 49-25 win over 2001
NCAA playoff qualifier Bethel. Barkley rushed 30 times for 243 yards in
just three quarters as the Tommies built a 42-6 lead. He had TD runs of
56, 14, 5, 32 and 2 yards. It was the 17th 100-yard game and third
200-yard rushing game of Barkley's career.
TE Mike Healy, Jr., Chicago Healy had seven catches for 92
yards in a 33-9 win against North Park.
WR Ricky Lannetti, Jr., Lycoming Lannetti had a career day
for the Warriors in a 24-6 defeat of Lebanon Valley. The junior wideout
caught seven passes for 173 yards, including a 54-yard touchdown on the
first play of the fourth quarter that gave Lycoming a 17-6 cushion.
Lannetti also tallied 41 yards returning punts and 17 yards returning a
kickoff to account for 231 all-purpose yards. Entering the game Lannetti
had three career receptions for 32 yards.
WR Greg Fleming, Sr., Otterbein Fleming set career highs in
receptions (13), yards (171) and touchdowns (two) in Otterbein's 33-13 win
against Waynesburg.
Defense DL Sean O'Leary, Sr., St.
Thomas Senior DE Sean O'Leary had three sacks among his eight
tackles and added two pass break-ups in the Tommies' 49-25 win over 2001
NCAA playoff qualifier Bethel. O'Leary, who had 14.5 sacks last season,
now has 22 sacks in 22 games as a starter and needs one more to beocme the
St. Thomas career leader. The Tommie defense held Bethel to just one TD in
the first 2 1-2 quarters as the tema built a 42-6 lead.
DL Brad Griffith, Sr., Hobart Griffith recorded a game-high
10 tackles in a 27-3 win against Dickinson, including two for a loss. He
also forced a fumble and recovered two fumbles. As a team, the Statesmen
limited Dickinson to 110 yards rushing.
DL Brandon Doppelheuer, Jr., Waynesburg Doppelheuer recorded
11 tackles, seven solo, and four for loss in a 33-13 loss to
Otterbein.
LB Brandon Roberts, Sr., Washington U. Roberts tallied 18
total tackles (10 solo) as the Bears held MacMurray to just 153 yards of
total offense and seven first downs in a 16-10 loss to the Highlanders. He
had 1½ tackles for loss and half a sack and caused a fumble.
LB Josh Funsch, Sr., Alma Funsch had nine tackles, including
three for lost yardage and two quarterback sacks in the Scots' 23-16
victory against Wheaton.
LB Zach Beeler, Sr., Hanover Beeler had 16 total tackles,
including 12 solo, as Hanover snapped Thomas More's 17-game regular-season
winning streak in a 36-3 win. The Saints averaged just 3.8 yards per snap.
Beeler added a tackle for loss.
LB Pete Mohoric, Sr., Franklin & Marshall Mohoric forced
a fumble at the goal line with five minutes to play to preserve a 13-6
F&M win against Catholic. He finished with nine tackles (four solo)
and a sack.
DB Wes Bradley, Sr., Sewanee Bradley recorded three total
tackles, but blocked a punt that was later converted into a touchdown,
then blocked an extra point in a 19-12 win against Rose-Hulman. He also
intercepted a pass and broke up two more.
DB Kevin Dewey, Jr., UW-Stout Dewey had a fumble recovery, an
interception and forced a fumble. Each of the turnovers led to points (for
a total of 13) as Stout routed Millsaps 30-6.
DB Pete Mayer, Jr., Ithaca In his first career start, Mayer
led Ithaca with 10 tackles and intercepted a pass. He helped the Bomber
defense hold Alfred to seven three-and-out possessions (on 15 drives) and
stopped prevented the Saxons’ Jesse Raynor from rushing for 100 yards for
the first time in seven games.
DB Ryan McCarty, Fr., Ohio Wesleyan McCarty picked off an
Olivet pass in the Ohio Wesleyan end zone with five seconds left to seal a
25-21 non-conference win. McCarty had recovered an Olivet fumble at the
Ohio Wesleyan 39 with 2:16 to play to set up Ohio Wesleyan's game-winning
scoring drive. McCarty finished with two interceptions, two fumble
recoveries, a pass breakup and five tackles.
Special teams K Michael Morzenti, Fr.,
Chicago Morzenti set a Chicago modern era record with four field
goals in the Maroons' 33-9 win against North Park. Morzenti was 4-for-4 on
the day, connecting from 24, 35, 36, and 39 yards out. He was also perfect
on two extra-point attempts.
P Dan Eggerston, So., Franklin & Marshall Eggertsson kept
his team in the game versus Catholic dropping punt after punt in CUA
territory. He pinned Catholic on the 1 with one punt (58 yards) to hold
the Cardinal offense in check. Four of his six punts, which averaged 39.9
yards, were downed.
RET Blake Elliott, Jr., St. John's Elliott returned three
punts for 98 yards, including an 86-yard return for a touchdown in a 56-0
win over Hamline. The 86-yard punt return was the third longest in school
history. Elliott also caught six passes for 92 yards and two touchdowns.
