Mike Warker passed for 312 yards and four touchdowns to lead
Widener to a 29-17 victory over Wilkes yesterday in Edwardsville,
Pa.
Warker, who completed 20 of 36 attempts, hit Mike deMarteleire
nine times for 136 yards and one touchdown, and connected with
Tyreak Saviour three times for 84 yards and two touchdowns.
Widener (1-0, 1-0 Middle Atlantic Conference) held a 17-14 lead
at the half before Warker hit Bo Fischer with a 17-yard touchdown
pass to give the Pioneers a 23-14 lead entering the fourth
quarter.
Will McLaughlin's 20-yard field goal helped Wilkes (1-1, 0-1) cut
into the lead before Warker and Saviour teamed on a 53-yard
touchdown pass with 9 minutes, 31 seconds left.
Bloomsburg 27, Shippensburg 26 - Julius Brown's 1-yard
touchdown run with less than three minutes remaining gave Bloomsburg
(1-1) the victory over Shippensburg (0-2) in Shippensburg, Pa.
Shippensburg trailed by 14-6 early in the third quarter, but
scored three straight touchdowns to take a 26-14 lead with 12:37 to
go.
Bloomsburg responded with a 56-yard drive in which Andrew Herrman
threw a 20-yard touchdown pass to Tierell Johnson. The extra point
failed, keeping the score 26-20 before Brown's touchdown capped an
11-play, 53-yard drive.
Tim Oliver kicked the winning extra point.
Franklin and Marshall 13, Catholic 6 - Pete Mohoric forced
a fumble and Bill Stone recovered it in the end zone to stymie a
late drive by Catholic University (0-2) and preserve the victory for
Franklin and Marshall (2-0) in Lancaster.
F&M scored on a 4-yard run by Paul Fix and a 28-yard catch by
Justin Salton.
West Virginia State 24, Cheyney 0 - Kerrick Cooper rushed
for 78 yards and a touchdown and West Virginia State (1-1) took
advantage of four turnovers while blanking Cheyney (0-2) in Cheyney,
Pa.
Cooper's score, on a 53-yard burst in the third quarter, gave
West Virginia State a 17-0 lead. The Yellow Jackets had taken a 10-0
lead in the first half on David Mitchell's 45-yard field goal and
Hollis Lewis' 6-yard touchdown pass to Raymond Hardy.
College of New Jersey 41, Cortland State 38 - Bob Schurtz
threw a 12-yard touchdown to Joe Franzone to give the College of New
Jersey (2-0) the overtime win over Cortland State (1-1) in Cortland,
N.Y.
Franzone's catch ended a wild game that saw the teams combine for
1,055 yards of total offense.
Cortland State got the ball first in overtime but had to settle
for a 28-yard field goal by George Oostmeyer.
Schurtz threw for 333 yards and three touchdowns to the lead the
College of New Jersey.
Clarion 24, Millersville 3 - Kerwin Cledanor intercepted a
pass and returned it 50 yards for a score early in the third quarter
to break open a tight game and help Clarion (1-1) top Millersville
(0-2) in Millersville, Pa.
Cledanor's touchdown 2:50 into the third period gave Clarion a
14-3 lead.
Clarion pulled away in the fourth period when Chris Carlton
kicked a 26-yard field goal and Frantz Charles added a 6-yard
touchdown run.
Muhlenberg 40, Cal Lutheran 32 - Matt Bernardo rushed for
three touchdowns, including two in the fourth quarter, to lead
Muhlenberg (2-0) to a come-from-behind win over California Lutheran
(0-1) in Allentown.
Muhlenberg trailed by 29-20 before Bernardo's 1-yard touchdown
run 51 seconds into the final period closed the gap. Bernardo, who
finished with 130 yards on 28 carries, raced 50 yards for a
touchdown with 12:23 left to give Muhlenberg a lead it would not
surrender.
Albright 52, Delaware Valley 14 - John Port set a school
record with six touchdown passes in his first collegiate start as
Albright (1-0, 1-0 Middle Atlantic Conference) took out Delaware
Valley (0-2, 0-2) in Reading.
Port completed 21 of 30 passes for 402 yards.
Lock Haven 21, Kutztown 14 - Lock Haven (1-1) scored 21
points in the fourth quarter, including a touchdown by Rob Carey on
his first career catch, to come back and beat Kutztown (1-1) in Lock
Haven, Pa.
Brockport 25, New Jersey City 7 - Bob Darnley threw two
touchdown passes and Brockport (1-1) scored 19 unanswered
second-half points in a victory over New Jersey City (0-1) in Jersey
City, N.J.
Hampden-Sydney 37, Gettysburg 22 - Mac Russell completed
20 of 31 passes for 229 yards and two touchdowns to guide
