TRICHILO, DeMOSS NAMED PLAYERS OF THE YEAR ANNVILLE, Pa. --
Wilkes
record-setting running back Brett Trichilo was named the Offensive Player
of the Year and Widener defensive lineman Thomas DeMoss was selected as
the Defensive Player of the Year, while conference champion Lycoming had
11 players chosen to the first and second teams headlining the 2003 Middle
Atlantic All-Conference football team.
Delaware Valley head coach G.A. Mangus was chosen as the Coach of
the Year and Moravian freshman running back Chris Jacoubs was named the
Rookie of the Year in the other individual awards selected by the Middle
Atlantic Conference head coaches.
Trichilo, a junior from Dunmore, Pa., had one of the top offensive
seasons in the history of the conference. He broke conference records for
yards in a season (2,079), rushing touchdowns (27), yards per game (207.9)
and tied the conference record for points in a season (162). In the
process he became just the seventh player in NCAA history to rush for more
than 2,000 yards in a season. He joins Dante Brown of Marietta, Dan Pugh
of Mount Union, R.J. Bowers of Grove City (twice), Carey Bender of Coe and
Ricky Gales of Simpson on that exclusive list.
DeMoss, a senior from Myersville, Md., was fourth in the MAC in
sacks per game (0.75) and led the conference in tackles for loss per game
(2.20). He recorded 67 total tackles from his nose guard position, which
was second on the Pioneers.
Albright quarterback John Port was named to the first team after
setting conference records for passing yards in a season (3,397) and total
offense (3,358). Port finished the season 237-of-374 for 3,397 yards and
29 touchdowns.
Running backs Craig Moshier of Juniata, Richard Jackson of King’s
and Mike Novia of King’s joined Trichilo and Port in the first-team
backfield. Moshier established a school record with 1,249 yards rushing
and also became the first player in Juniata history to rush for over 1,000
yards in back-to-back seasons. Jackson was second in the conference with
1,517 yards rushing and second in scoring averaging 9.6 points per game.
Novia was named the first team fullback after helping pave the way for
Jackson. He rushed for 114 yards on the season and averaged 5.7 yards per
carry.
Leading the receiving corps is Susquehanna senior Mark Bartosic.
Bartosic was named to the first team for the fourth straight season
becoming just the seventh player in MAC history to achieve that
distinction. The senior caught 78 passes for 1,313 yards and 13
touchdowns. He leaves Susquehanna as the MAC career leader in receptions
(275), yards receiving (4,733) and touchdowns (55). He finished sixth in
Division III history in catches and second in receiving yards. Bartosic
was also named first team special teams player after ranking second in the
MAC in punt return average and third in kickoff return average.
Also earning first team honors was senior Ricky Lannetti of
Lycoming and junior Tyreak Saviour of Widener. Lannetti was third in the
MAC in receptions per game (7.22) and fifth in receiving yards per game
(101.7), while Saviour ranked fourth in the MAC in receptions per game
(7.10) and second in yards per game (113.8).
Lebanon Valley tight end Scott Marek was named first team after
catching 41 passes for 632 yards and seven touchdowns.
Jason Holloway and Tom Wighard of Wilkes were both named to the
first team offensive line after helping lead a Colonels offensive attack
that averaged 421.2 yards of total offense and 36.3 points per game. Also
earning first team honors on the offensive line was Lycoming senior Matt
Mendola, Albright senior Scott Matsinger, senior Todd Nelson of King’s and
junior Mark Hamilton of Susquehanna.
Lycoming freshman Chris Schrader was named first team kicker after
converting 7-of-12 field goals and 31-of-34 PAT’s. He also ranked second
in the conference in kick scoring with 52 points.
Joining DeMoss on the first team defensive line are Sean McGinley
of Lycoming, Adam Summers of Susquehanna and Julian Morales of Wilkes.
McGinley led the conference with 10.5 sacks and was tied for third with
18.0 tackles for loss. Summers earned first team honors after recording
5.5 sacks. Morales helped lead a Wilkes defense that allowed only 14.6
points per game, which led the conference.
Steve Rogers and Jason Mitkowski of Wilkes and Luke Sterling of
Lycoming were named first team linebackers. Rogers was second on the
Colonels with 81 total tackles, while the freshman Mitkowski led the team
with 89 tackles. Sterling was the anchor of a solid Lycoming defense that
allowed only 275.1 yards per game. The sophomore had 7.5 sacks and 13.0
tackles for loss.
Senior Carlo DeAngelo heads the first team defensive backfield. The
senior led the conference, and ranked third in the nation, with nine
interceptions. He also ranked third in the MAC with 15 passes
defended.
King’s senior Matt VonTanhausen, Lycoming junior Brian Kaspick and
Wilkes sophomore Thaddeus Shockley were also named to the first team
defense.
Earning second team all-conference offensive honors were
quarterback Phil Mann, offensive lineman Dickie Houck and kick returner
Ricky Lannetti of Lycoming, running back Taylor Ramos, tight end Kevin
Moloney, kicker Bill Miller and offensive lineman Jamie Kleinle of
Delaware Valley, running back Pete Henning of Lebanon Valley, Wilkes
fullback Kyle Gallagher, wide receivers Jesse Dorais and Nick Cushman of
Albright, wide receiver Julian Walker and offensive lineman Jim Baird of
King’s, Moravian offensive lineman Andrew Leska and Widener offensive
lineman Justin Steiner.
Named to the All-Middle Atlantic Conference second team defense was
Delaware Valley defensive lineman Anthony Silver, defensive lineman Bill
Gill and linebacker Casey Meehan of King’s, defensive lineman Garrett
Zoschg and linebacker Tim Schmidt of Lycoming, defensive lineman Kevin
McLaughlin and defensive backs John Panikiewsky and Nate Pogue of
Moravian, FDU-Florham linebacker Joe Sangiovanni, defensive back Kevin
Bliss and punter Bert Wenzel of Albright, Wilkes defensive back Jon
