Lycoming Warriors Coast To 28-14 Win At Juniata

By John Green
November 1, 2003 Huntingdon - The Warriors of Lycoming College used a renewed running attack with their usual proficient passing attack to coast to a 28-14 victory over Juniata.  Lycoming scored 28 unanswered points while on their way to victory, but may have suffered a blow to their rushing attack as Robert Miller exited the game with a rib injury in the third quarter.   Miller ended up with 125 yards on 23 carries.

With temperatures in the low 70's, Lycoming needed little time to warm up as they scored three touchdowns in the first quarter.  The Warriors first score was an 80 yard drive on 14 plays using up 5:34 of the clock.  The drive was fueled by the running game as Robert Miller had 36 yards on the ground and QB Phil Mann added 13 rushing yards before he found Sean Hennigar open on the left side of the end zone for the TD.  The PAT was good by Chris Schrader as Lycoming lead 7-0.

Lycoming's starting defense played perfect in the game and shut down the 5th ranked offense in the MAC on their first offensive drive giving them just three plays and forcing a punt.  The Warriors scored their second touchdown of the quarter on their second possession of the game using the running attack again.  Robert Miller capped off the 67 yard drive with a 9 yard scramble up the middle.  The extra point was blocked by the Eagles and Lycoming extended their lead to 13-0.

Lycoming scored on a three play drive set up by the 40 yard completion from Phil Mann to Tim Brown.  FB Dan Snee rushed for one yard on the third play for the score and Sean Hennigar catch a 2 PAT pass conversion to finish the quarter at 21-0.

The dominant Lycoming defense came out the second half holding the Eagles on their first possession then scoring on a 6 play 52 yard drive.  Robert Miller and Drew Corsilli shared rushing yardage, but it was Corsilli (9-45 yards) who had three consecutive runs of 8, 18 and 1 yard to score the Warrior's last touchdown of the day.  The PAT by Schrader was good and Lycoming lead by 28-0.

Juniata scored their first touchdown on a Lycoming turnover.  Phil Mann was picked off at the Lycoming 32 yard line by D.J. Dunmire who returned the ball for a touchdown.  The PAT was good and Juniata trailed by 21 points.  Juniata's last score came late in the game as Lycoming had fresh lineup of defensive players in the game.  With just 58 seconds on the clock, QB Michael Meadows found Allen Barch open in the end zone.  Daniel Heinlein kicked the PAT.  Final score Lycoming 28-14 over Juniata.

Lycoming Head Coach Frank Girardi stressed that Lycoming has not run the ball well all year.  "Last week we really came alive with it (the run) and we wanted to continue doing a good job running the ball today, and I think we did."  Girardi gave Juniata credit for playing hard in the second half of the game today.  "We had a misread on one (pass play) and number 5 (D. J. Dunmire) made a great play on it.  I think we lost our focus a little bit in the second half but I think Juniata played so tough all day long.  Kevin has them playing hard."

Lycoming's defense allowed only 99 yards net rushing in the game.  "Our defense comes up big all the time," Girardi pointed out. Frank was not happy about all the flags thrown in the second half.  He did say that many of them were deserved and "we just have to be more focused.  We cannot continue to play like that."

In talking about Robert Miller's injury in the third quarter, Coach Girardi did not think his running back had a serious injury.  He does know that those injuries are very painful.  "Whether or not he will be ready this week, I don't know, but he is a rough customer and if there is any way he can play, he will play next week."

Coach Girardi was happy with the execution of the offensive line.  "It is something we worked hard on all week and as I said before, when you get down the line you have to be able to run the football."

Next week, Lycoming is at home playing Widener.  Game time is 1:00pm at David Person field.
