The Story
Madison NJ -- Lycoming College (Ranked 24th in Division III Nationally) came into this game being shut out offensively
by #5 Widener and something to prove to themselves and Warrior fans. After the game was
over, they were very happy with almost every aspect of their game. Head
Coach Frank Girardi talked about the game against Widener and said the Lycoming
offense
just did not get it done last week and obviously "We have to be more productive
across the board, but defensively we played pretty well. The score did
not indicate that, but we did play well defensively and we have to maintain our defensive
composure."
Coming into this game against FDU Madison, Lycoming wanted to rebound the
season. Coach "G" talked about their goal of getting into the
National Playoffs
and how big this game is to the season. "Every game is like a big
game for us right now. It is like a playoff game if we are going to
achieve what we wanted to achieve," Frank said. Asked about the
a
rumor floating around that Lycoming's QB Joe Feerrar had a dislocated shoulder, Frank said
that is not true. He did have a slight separation in his non-throwing arm
side for three weeks, but nothing that would keep him out of the game today.
Offensively, Frank talked about how the team must breakout. "We
have to breakout. We have to be able to throw the ball short and we have to be
able to audible on the line of scrimmage and take advantage of their D
backs. If we do that our running game should turn around. You know,
we are disappointed because we did not run the football well last week and
we have to run the football."
The Game
Lycoming needed to "Break Out" today and
that is exactly what the Warriors did. QB Joe Feerrar had an excellent
aerial game as he completed 21 of 32 passes and three touchdowns.
His longest pass was the opening first quarter touchdown with just 2:30 on the
clock. He found WR Kyle Bingaman open down the sideline connecting for
the 48 yard score. The extra point was perfect by Dave Christensen (Five of
7 on the day) and Lycoming was rolling 7-0. Just three minutes later,
running back Tim Deasey score his first of two touchdowns on a 24 yard cutback
play through the middle to extend the score to 14-0.
Lycoming used the pass again in the second quarter
to extend their lead when QB Feerrar connected
with Chris Dauber for a 9 yard reception. With another perfect kick,
the Warriors put the Devils of Madison in the hole, 21-0. The Warriors
were not done yet in the half as Feerrar threw his last touchdown pass of the
game to WR Ray Withelder for 22 yards. At halftime, Lycoming dominated the
game 28-0 which was as much a defensive effort as an offensive success.
Lycoming's defense allowed only 4 first first downs in the half for 56 yards
total offense by FDU Madison. Madison QB Michael Passero was 2 for 9 and
six yards offensively.
The second half was not much better for the
Devils. Tim Deasey scored his second touchdown with 8:14 left in the third quarter on
a 14 yard scramble off the right side of the offensive line continuing their control of the game 34-0 as the extra point try was
blocked.. Deasey averaged 4.9 yards a carry against FDU, gaining 112 yards
rushing. Lycoming finished their scoring barrage with back to back punt returns by
Sophomore Ricky Lannetti. The first return was a 61 yard effort and the
second one, just 34 seconds later was 69 yards. This could be the first
time Lycoming has had two punt returns for touchdowns in one game and probably
is the first back to back punt return touchdowns. With the two special
team touchdowns, Lycoming finished
the game 47-0 with 477 yards offense against the Devils
131.
After the game, Head Coach Girardi was very pleased with the game.
He said that he
told the boys all week, "we have a talented team which the score last week did
not indicate, be we are pleased. We know that we are not a 35-0 team,
but were sharp today and the boys were focused and we are happy the
way they bounced back."
Lycoming has a week off next week and then
travels to Albright to face the always tough Knights in Reading.
